Guide to a Flawless Self-Tan

If you’re new to using self-tanners, it can be intimidating, especially if you’ve seen some of the terrible self-tanning mishaps by celebrities. You may be afraid of ending up looking like a patchy pumpkin. Well, there’s no need to worry when you use our PerfectTan Caring Self-Tan series and follow this guide, you’re in good (not orange) hands.

First, choose the right shade for you. If your skin is light, we recommend going for PerfectTan Self-Tan Light-Dark. If you naturally have a darker complexion, or if you want a deeper tan, you can either use Light-Dark self-tanner over a longer period of time or try our PerfectTan Self-Tan Ultra Dark.

1. Remove any unwanted hair and exfoliate 6-24 hours before

Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and dirt, ensuring a flawless tan without streaks or discoloration. Make sure to exfoliate thoroughly in areas where your skin is thicker, such as elbows, knees, and ankles. Exfoliation is recommended 6 to 24 hours before applying self-tanner.

We recommend using Exfoliate & Glow Body Scrub for an effective yet gentle exfoliation, suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. For an even more thorough exfoliation, you can use our Exfoliating Mitt.

2. Shower and dry your skin

Clean and dry skin, free from moisturizers and other products, before application ensures that the mousse is evenly distributed.

3. Apply in sections, going inwards to your torso

Apply the self-tanning mousse in sections (use a self-tanning mitt to avoid staining your palms): for example, the forearm and then the upper arm, the legs and then the upper body. Use circular motions to massage the mousse into your skin. You can use our VelvetLuxe Self-Tan Back Applicator for easy and streak-free application on your back.

4. Blend/fade at your wrists and ankles

Gently blend the mousse from the wrists to the hands, and from the ankles to the feet, for a natural-looking finish. Use our Self-Tan Kabuki Brush for even application on the hands and feet.

5. Thin out the mousse over joints

Knees, ankles, and elbows tend to have drier and tougher skin, which can absorb more product than the rest of the skin. Thin out the mousse by lightly rubbing with a damp towel before application.

6. Allow the mousse to dry and develop

Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed, and before showering, we recommend wearing loose clothes and avoiding sweating.

Depending on the shade you are using and how dark you want your tan to be, the tan will start to appear as a light-medium bronze color after 4 hours. Refer to the bottle for shade indication.

7. Rinse of guide color and excess product

Take a shower using warm water to rinse off the guide color and any excess self-tanning product. Gently pat your skin dry with a towel, avoiding any harsh rubbing that may remove the tan.

8. Enjoy your perfect tan!

Our PerfectTan Self-Tan series contains moisturizing and nourishing ingredients, so you’re now ready to show off your flawless tan. The duration of the tan depends on how often you shower. Generally, it will fade after 5-7 days. If you wish to remove it earlier, you can use TanEraser Self-Tan Remover to gently and effectively remove the self-tan.
